In short: A CMS collection renders every item through one template, so the structure of the template is the structure of every page in the collection.
That cuts both ways and the second way is the useful one. A structural fault is repeated across hundreds of pages, and one fix repairs all of them at once.
So the highest-value hour on a Webflow site is usually spent on a template rather than on any individual page.
The Template Is The Page
Collection pages look like separate pages to a reader and are one decision to a builder. Whatever order the template puts things in, every item inherits.
If the template opens with a hero image, a breadcrumb, a related-items row and then the rich text field that carries the actual content, then every item in the collection answers its question fourth. A system taking one passage from under the heading takes the related-items row.
Nothing about this is visible page by page, because each page looks fine and the fault is identical everywhere. It is visible in one place, which is the template.
Where The Rich Text Should Sit
Directly under the heading it answers, and before anything decorative.
The rest of the template is support: images, related items, calls to action, author blocks. None of them is what somebody asked for, and all of them compete for the position that decides which passage gets lifted.
Moving one element in a template is a smaller job than rewriting a single page, and it applies to the whole collection. There is no other edit on a Webflow site with that ratio.
What The Collection Fields Decide
Three fields do structural work and are usually treated as metadata.
The heading field. Whatever it holds becomes the page's h1 if the template is built that way, and becomes nothing if it is not. Check the tag in the output rather than assuming, for the reason the previous lesson gives.
The summary or excerpt field. If the template prints it under the heading, it is the first text in the document and therefore the candidate passage. That makes it the most important sentence on every page in the collection, and it is usually written as a teaser.
The date field. Printed, it dates the claim. Not printed, a system has to guess freshness. This is nearly free to add and it is the difference between a claim that can be judged current and one that cannot.
Rewrite the excerpts before rewriting anything else. On a collection of two hundred items, the excerpt is two hundred first sentences. Written as an answer rather than as a tease, it turns the whole collection into pages that open with the thing somebody asked for.
Items That Should Not Be Pages
Collections make page creation nearly free, which is how a site ends up with a page per tag, a page per author, and a page per item in a list that was really a list.
The test from Where Shopify Stores Lose the Answer transfers exactly: is there a sentence worth writing at the top of this page. If the only content would be the item's name restated, it is a list entry rather than a page, and a thin page competing with your real one is a loss rather than coverage.
Checking A Template
- Open one published item from each collection and view its source.
- List the heading tags in order and confirm the item's title is the h1.
- Find where the rich text field starts in document order and count what comes before it.
- Read the excerpt as though it were the only sentence a system would see, because it may be.
- Fix the template, republish, and check a different item from the same collection to confirm it propagated.
Key Takeaways
- A collection template is the structure of every page in the collection, so one structural fault repeats across all of them and one fix repairs all of them.
- Put the rich text field directly under the heading it answers, before anything decorative.
- The excerpt field is the first text on every page in the collection. Write it as an answer rather than as a teaser.
- Print the date. A claim nobody can date has to have its freshness guessed.
- An item whose page would only restate its name is a list entry, not a page.
