In short: Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of getting your material read, named and trusted by systems that answer a question rather than list pages. The term comes from a research paper submitted in November 2023 and published at ACM SIGKDD 2024.
What separates it from SEO is not the tactics, most of which carry straight over, but the unit of success: search competes for a position among ten results, where being fourth still earns clicks.
A generated answer has no fourth place. You are in it or you are not mentioned.
Where The Term Comes From
Generative Engine Optimization is not an agency coinage. It was introduced in GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, by Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues, submitted to arXiv in November 2023 (arXiv:2311.09735) and later published at ACM SIGKDD 2024.
That matters for a practical reason: it means there is a primary document to argue with, which is rarer in this field than it should be.
The paper defined the problem as optimising content for visibility inside generated responses, and tested nine methods for doing it. Adding citations, quotations and statistics to a source page raised its visibility in generated answers by up to 40% on GEO-bench.
Read that number carefully. GEO-bench is the authors' own benchmark, built and measured under their own conditions. The up to 40% reported in that paper is a real, published result and a reasonable reason to take the field seriously. It is not a forecast for your website, and anyone quoting it as one has not read past the abstract.
What Actually Changed
Two things changed. Everything else people describe as new follows from them.
The result is one answer, not ten options
A search engine returns a ranked list and lets the reader choose. A generative engine reads the sources itself, decides which ones are worth using, and returns a single composed answer naming a handful of them. The reader is handed a conclusion instead of a shortlist.
This collapses the middle of the results page. In classic search, ranking fourth for a commercial query was a viable business. In a generated answer that cites three sources, fourth place is silence. There is no partial credit and no long tail of consolation traffic.
The click is no longer the only transaction
When a model summarises your comparison table into two sentences and attributes it to you, the reader may never load your page. You were used. You were credited. Your analytics show nothing.
That is uncomfortable, and it is also the point. A named mention inside an answer someone asked for carries weight that an impression on a results page never did. The cost is that your existing measurement was built to count visits, and visits are now a shrinking share of the value you produce.
On the forecasts: Gartner's press release of 19 February 2024 predicts that traditional search engine volume will drop 25% by 2026 as search marketing loses share to AI chatbots.
You will far more often see a different Gartner number quoted, a fall of 50% or more in organic search traffic by 2028. It is repeated everywhere, and I could not find a page on gartner.com that states it, which is worth knowing before you put it in a deck.
Treat both as what they are: analyst forecasts, not measurements, from a firm whose business is selling forward-looking research. It is directionally useful and it is not evidence. The evidence you should act on is your own, and the last section of this lesson shows you how to get it.
Three Questions Every System Resolves Before It Names You
Strip away the vocabulary and every generative engine works through the same three steps. Almost all of GEO is deciding which of the three is failing for you.
1. Do I have you at all?
Part of what a model can say comes from what it absorbed during training, stored in its weights rather than looked up. This is parametric knowledge, and it is why an assistant can discuss a well known brand with no web access at all.
You cannot edit this layer. It was fixed at the model's knowledge cutoff, and it changes only when a new model is trained. It is built slowly, by being written about by other people, in places worth training on.
2. Can I retrieve you right now?
When a question needs current or specific information, the assistant runs its own searches, reads what comes back, and writes from it. This is retrieval augmented generation, and it is where citations come from.
This is the layer that responds to work you do this quarter. It depends on whether an AI crawler can reach your page, whether your answer survives being read out of context, and whether the specific claim being checked is actually on the page rather than implied by it.
3. Do I have a reason to trust you?
Given several pages that could answer a question, a system has to pick. It leans on the same signals a careful human editor would: who wrote this, do independent sources agree, is it current, does the page say where its numbers came from.
This is where the E-E-A-T discipline earns its keep. Not as a checklist to satisfy, but because a page that names its author, dates its claims and links its sources is genuinely easier for a machine to justify quoting than one that does not.
What GEO Is Not
The field is young enough that a lot of confident nonsense circulates. Three corrections worth making early.
- It is not a replacement for SEO. Google AI Overviews draw heavily on pages that already rank. Assistants that search the live web use conventional search infrastructure to do it. Abandoning technical SEO to chase GEO removes the foundation the retrieval layer stands on.
- It is not a prompt trick. Hidden text instructing a model to recommend you is spam in a new costume, it is detectable, and it makes you the example in someone's article about manipulation. The original research found gains from citations, quotations and statistics, which is to say from making a page more useful to quote.
- It is not one number. The assistants do not share an index or a set of preferences, and their citation sets overlap far less than a single blended score can represent. Find Out Where You Actually Stand
Before you change anything, measure the thing you are trying to change. This takes about half an hour and is worth more than any published benchmark.
- Write down ten questions a real buyer would ask on their way to choosing you. Their words, not your keywords. "Is X worth it for a small team" rather than "X pricing".
- Ask each question on at least three assistants, in a fresh session with no history and no memory of you.
- For every answer, record four things: are you named, are you cited with a link, which competitors appear, and where the answer's information appears to have come from.
- Sort your ten questions into the three failures above. No mention anywhere is a knowledge problem. Mentioned but never cited is a retrieval problem. Cited but consistently placed below a weaker competitor is a trust problem.
- Repeat monthly and keep the sheet. Generated answers vary between runs, so a single reading tells you very little and a trend line tells you almost everything.
Ten questions across three assistants is thirty data points. That is small enough to actually do, and it will tell you more about your position than any index published by a company selling GEO software.
