Key differences between optimizing for Google rankings vs AI recommendations. What transfers from SEO to GEO and what's completely different.

No, GEO is not SEO renamed, and you need both. Most of the work is shared: crawlability, architecture, speed, genuine expertise and earned links serve both, because the retrieval layer behind AI answers runs on conventional search infrastructure. Six things genuinely changed. The largest is that a generated answer has no fourth place: search competes for a position among ten results where fourth still earns clicks, and an answer citing three sources does not.
Most of what you already know still applies, and this module is specific about which parts. Crawlability, architecture, speed, genuine expertise and earned links transfer unchanged, because the retrieval layer behind AI answers runs on ordinary search infrastructure. The entrance is the same entrance.
Against that, six things genuinely changed: inclusion replaces position, value arrives without a click, selection discards you before judging you, the system searches its own rewritten query, results vary between identical runs, and the platforms disagree about which sources exist. Every real difference traces back to one of those six. The much longer list of claimed differences does not.
The module ends on budget, and on the sort that makes the usual argument a false choice: list the actual tasks and the column serving both disciplines is longer than either single-purpose column.
If you read one lesson: What Stays the Same. It contains the audit that most often finds the actual problem, which is usually deferred technical SEO rather than anything GEO-specific.
